Natural Fibre Rugs & Carpets
Some things to conside before purchasing...
If you're looking to purchase a Natural Fibre product from us (Sisal, Seagrass, Jute and Wool), please pay close attention to the below.
Some of our products are manufactured with synthetic yarn.
This is different to a natural fibre which is spun from plant materials,.
Jute comes from the Jute plant.
Sisal is yarn spun from the Agave plant.
Seagrass is constructed using a yarn spun from a dried sedge plant grown in saltwater marshes.
Wool comes from a sheep.
Because these are not synthetic yarns, the thickness, length and other characteristics of the yarn are not uniform. This is what gives the products their rich texture.
But it also means that the following are not considered faults:
- Colour and dye differences on a roll: a streaky effect in the colour are known as 'striations.'
- Weaving irregularities: these products are woven - meaning that a warp and a weft are woven together to make the carpet. Because the yarn is not uniform and the carpet is woven under tension, these products are not 100% straight. When we make the rugs, we cut along the line of the warp or weft, which is unlikely to be 100% straight.
- Joining knots, especially in Jute.
In addition, one should note that Natural Fibres require a different cleaning protocol to the synthetic fibres. They are not as easy to clean as the synthetic options. The cleaning instructions of each product are available on the Product's page under 'Specifications'.
Finally, Natural Fibre rugs are heavy - large rugs can weigh around 50kg. In practical terms, this means:
- You will need help when receiving a large (e.g. 3x4m, 4x5m) natural fibre rug. The delivery service is door-to-door. The couriers shouldn't be bringing the rug into your home.
- It is surprisingly difficult to neatly lay out a large Natural Fibre rug by oneself. This is more than a 1-person job; larger rugs may require a few extra sets of hands
- The rug will be delivered on a sturdy cardboard core, securely wrapped in plastic. Please hold onto the packaging for a while; should a return be necessary, especially on a heavy rug, we need the rug to be re-wrapped securely with the plastic on the core for safe(r) transport.
